Registration for K-3 Developmental League is now open!

Dear Palo Alto basketball families,

We are now accepting registrations for the PANJB K-3 Developmental League for the 2017-2018 season. Click here to register. Please see details below, and sign up as soon as possible—waitlists are likely to form quickly. Feel free to share with your friends.

Please note that players for this year’s K-3 Developmental League will get registration priority for next year’s PANJB 3rd/4th grade D3 leagues, which traditionally fill in a few hours.

10 WEEKS OF INTENSE BASKETBALL FUN AND SKILL-BUILDING

Our new K-3 Developmental League combines skills clinics, scrimmages, and actual league play.  Ten weekly sessions, 90 minutes each, will develop the critical skills foundation for our youngest players.

Skills developed will include:

  • Basic ball handling: eyes up, both hands, use of guard hand, zig zag
  • Footwork: jump stop, pivot, reverse pivot, 1-2 step
  • Advanced ball handling: cross-over, hesitation, spin, power dribble
  • Shooting: one hand release, backspin, proper footwork and backboard use
  • Finishing: layups from both sides, basic Eurostep, reverse
  • Passing: proper form, passing in front, eyes up, chest pass, bounce pass
  • Defense: on-ball and off-ball defense, stance, slide, turn and run, help side
  • Team Offense: Triple threat, 5-out, pass and cut, pass and screen, post pass.
  • Rebounding: Proper position, boxing out, closing on the ball
  • Game Situations: Players will spend the last 30 minutes of each clinic in game-situation scrimmages.

NEW THIS YEAR: DEVELOPMENTAL LEAGUE GAMES!

We’re excited about a new addition to our K-3 format.  In the second half of the season, players will have the opportunity to participate in 3-4 real games in addition to their clinic times. This will expose the kids to actual game environments, including uniforms, referees, scores, substations, timeouts and adoring fans—as they prepare to make the leap to “the league” in a future season.

STAFF:

This year’s K-3 program will be run by Gunn High School Varsity Boys coach, and KOPA founder, Brandynn Williams.  Coach Williams has designed a fun, action-packed, developmental-focused program to get our future PANJB stars “game ready.” Brandynn will be joined by assistant coaches, and area high school players, who will also serve as team coaches during the scrimmages and developmental league games.

WHEN:

Sessions will be Saturday mornings and/or midday, starting December 2nd and running through February (Excluding 12/23, 12/30 and 2/17). Final times and locations will be announced in the coming weeks, once we determine how many sessions there will be.

COST:

In an attempt to make our clinic as accessible as possible, we are lowering our fees this year to $325.  That’s especially exciting since we are adding several league games, plus including a reversible PANJB Rookie jersey that the kids will wear during the clinics and games, and get to keep this year.

At PANJB, we are dedicated to nurturing the love of basketball into the next generation of kids.  If you have questions, please email our friendly Parent Liaison volunteers at parents@panjb.com. We hope to see you on the court!

Registration for 2017-18 Season now open

Palo Alto Basketball Parents,

Welcome to another great season of PANJB basketball!  Please read this notice in its entirety as we are implementing some exciting new changes this year.

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

Registration is now open for all at https://paloaltonjb.siplay.com/Login, following advanced registration for returning parents. A couple of divisions are already full with returning families, but we are working hard to add new teams.  So if you get on the waiting list, stay tuned for more news! It also means we need more parent coaches (you?) to volunteer. Every coach who steps up is giving ten more kids the chance to experience PANJB this year.  This season we will have more support than ever for our volunteer coaches, so please consider it.  Email our coaching coordinator at coaches@panjb.com if you are the least bit intrigued by the idea. To check if you are eligible to join the Palo Alto chapter, or a different chapter in NJB, check out the chapter map.

PROGRAM DETAILS & MANDATORY EVALUATIONS

All regular season games are on Sundays. Practices start in late October. Games start the first weekend in December and end with a tournament in late February, except where noted below. If your child absolutely cannot attend one of the age-appropriate sessions listed above, email parents@panjb.com  to request a make-up evaluation session on either Thursday 9/28 or Thursday 10/5.

High school league: High schoolers who are not playing on a high school team may form their own NJB team to compete with other kids in the Bay Area. There is no tryout or assessment. Contact our High School League Commissioner (hscommish@panjb.com) for more information.

K-2 League: We will be running a developmental league for kindergarten through 2nd grades. Sessions run on weekends from December through February. More info to follow soon, with registration opening in mid October.

SUPER SATURDAYS

In an effort to expose all PANJB players to professional coaching—and provide more support for our volunteer parent coaches—we are changing how divisional practices work. All divisional teams will have 2 hour Saturday practices, including a one hour clinic with a professional “head coach” of the division who will then assist our parent coaches during a second hour of team practices.

WEEKNIGHT OPEN GYMS

Instead of having mandatory weeknight practices this season (we know the weekday gym schedules can be very difficult with traffic, homework, and bed times!), we will hold optional “open gyms” for each age group during the week. This is a chance for kids who want more court time to get out and play (with parent coach supervision). Note that All Net teams will still have required weeknight practices.

ALL STARS & ALL NET

We will be doubling down on our All Stars program this year.  The Head Coach for each division (see Super Saturdays above) will select and coach our All Star teams at the end of the regular season. Besides competing in the NJB tournament, these teams will be selected earlier in the year, and compete in at least one other local tournament—lengthening the All Star season by several weeks.  Because we believe this Regular Season + All Star experience is a better way to develop more young talent, this year we will not be fielding All Net teams except in 7th and 8th grades. The PANJB Board believes this will strengthen our divisional play, make our basketball community more inclusive, and keep our kids competing and growing together throughout the season.

PANJB NEEDS YOU TO COACH!

We depend on our awesome parent coaches to make our program work.  This year we are investing in professional Head Coaches (see above) to mentor and assist our parent coaches during practices… which means the experience should be better than ever.  Head coaches will receive a $150 rebate on fees, and assistant coaches will receive a $75 rebate. We are also piloting a high school assistant coach program this year, with a limited number of opportunities to receive 16 hours of service credit (all locally on weekends).  If you, or your high schooler, is interested in coaching, email our Coach Liaison at coaches@panjb.com. Coaching PANJB is a life-changing experience!

FEES

Fees for this year will be $475 (an increase of $75, to cover the professionally coached Saturday clinics and the extra weekly gym time). The $300 All Net surcharge will remain the same. We are committed to providing scholarships for every family in Palo Alto who needs the assistance.  Email treasurer@panjb.com to apply (all requests will be kept confidential).

Finally, to better support our great families and answer your questions more quickly, we have created a Parent Liaison who can be reached at parents@panjb.com. As a community organization, we truly value your input… so please drop us a line. We can’t wait to see you all on the court!
